Hamsas & Amulets
A hamsa (or khamssa) is a hand-shaped amulet, with the palm facing out and the fingers spread open to block ayin harah – “the evil eye.” Also called Hand of Miriam, a reference to Miriam, the sister of Moshe (Moses) and Aharon (Aaron). Some associate the five fingers with the five books of the Torah.
